On Friday 24 November 2017, PhD student at Center for Magnetic Resonance Cihan Göksu succesfully defended his PhD on A Novel Magnetic Resonance Imaging for Measuring Weak Electrical Currents inside the Human Brain.

Examiners were Associate Professor Esben Thade Petersen, DTU Elektro, Professor Yusuf Ziya Ider,  Bilkent University, Turkey, and Professor Oliver Bieri, University Hospital Basel, Switzerland. The defence took a little over two hours, and ended with a unanimous recommendation from the examiners' committee that the PhD degree should be conferred on Cihan Göksu.

Professor Jan Henrik Ardenkjær-Larsen from DTU Elektro was Chairperson at the defence.

Cihan's PhD project focuses on Magnetic Resonance Electrical Impedance Tomography, a promising but still immature modality for electrical conductivity imaging. The emergin method has potential in dagnostics and numerous biomedical applicatios, but the sensitivity of the method has not been high enough for clinical applications. Cihan's results with optimized MR pulse sequences is an important step towards in vivo studies of the human brain. The ultimate goal is to be able to apply non-invasive electrical stimulation of the brain to observe and influence brain activity on patients with neural diseases.
