Radio nuclids

Chemical elements exist in many forms called isotopes. Isotopes can be stable or they can be unstable and emit ionised radiation. The unstable isotopes are called radio nuclids.

On their own or in connection with a chemical reaction, radio nuclids are able to create a radioactive tracker. The radioactive trackers are used in nuclear medicinal examinations.

In the case of radioactive disintegration, the radio nuclids emit photons, electrons, neutrons or other sub-atomic particles.

Dosimetry

Dosimetry is a way of measuring ionised radiation and calculating its effect on living beings.

Dosimetry is especially used to control whether a limit of danger is crossed for people who are exposed to x-ray radiation and radioactive radiation i.e. patients or people who have been in accidents.

On 1 January 2020, 41 employees from recently closed DTU Nutech’s two sections Hevesy Lab and Dosimetry joined DTU Health Tech.

With the advent of DTU Nutech’s expertise, DTU Health Tech has strengthened its already strong competences within the development and fabrication of radio nuclids for medical use, i.e. both within imaging and treatment as well as medical and industrial dosimetry (measuring of administered dosis of radiation).

Head of Division, Jørgen Schøller expects a lot from this strengthening of DTU Health Tech.

“It is with great pleasure that DTU Health Tech receives these employees from DTU Nutech, as they strengthen our possibilities for developing and testing new radio nuclids for application in nuclear medicinal pre-clinical research as well as in clinical application, considerably. This is an area within which there has already been close collaboration over the last few years”, says Jørgen Schøller.

The employees from DTU Nutech will also contribute to creating more synergy.

“We will be further strengthened by the addition of employees with competencies within dosimetry because they give us the possibility to develop better measuring methods for the determination of the dosis of radiation placed in e.g. tumours. I look forward to the synergy and the results hereof which will be created by the close relation between the developers and users of radio nuclids and the related techniques which may be developed hereby”, says Jørgen Schøller.

Will remain located at Risø

The Hevesy Lab produces radio nuclids for medicinal application and delivers these for both research and clinical application at hospitals in the regions nearby. Radio nuclids are used e.g. in connection with X-ray and PET scans at hospitals. The Hevesy Lab also produces radio nuclids for application within the environmental area, which means future deliveries to DTU Environment.

The Dosimetry Lab is accredited for both The Medicinal and Industrial Dosimetry and also serves as the National Reference Laboratory which develops measuring techniques and devices for calibrating radiotherapy equipment at hospitals and industrial radiation units.

Employees will remain located physically at Risø as the necessary infrastructure for the production and handling of isotopes is not easily moved without great investments.
